What Are Ground Squirrels?
Ground squirrels are a species of rodents that do not live in trees, but rather underground, as their name suggests. Although often mistaken for chipmunks, ground squirrels are actually tiny prairie dogs. These marsupial rodents are equipped with cheek pouches that they use to carry fruits, seeds, and other gathered foods. Ground squirrels can commonly be found in open grassland and grain fields where they live beneath the ground in burrows. Despite their size, the holes ground squirrels dig can be quite large, not because they enjoy higher ceilings and more space for decorating, but because ground squirrels live in families with up to 10 per burrow. In these burrows, ground squirrels live, store food, and feed their young.
