It is hard to maintain a beautiful lawn and landscaping, especially when lawn pests are around. Here in Monterey, one type of lawn pest, in particular, is being extra problematic. They are called ground squirrels, and the holes you are finding in your yard could be their dirty work. Want to find out for certain? Let’s take a closer look at ground squirrels, and see if we can help you find a way to get them off your property

What Are Ground Squirrels?

Ground squirrels are a species of rodents that do not live in trees, but rather underground, as their name suggests. Although often mistaken for chipmunks, ground squirrels are actually tiny prairie dogs. These marsupial rodents are equipped with cheek pouches that they use to carry fruits, seeds, and other gathered foods. Ground squirrels can commonly be found in open grassland and grain fields where they live beneath the ground in burrows. Despite their size, the holes ground squirrels dig can be quite large, not because they enjoy higher ceilings and more space for decorating, but because ground squirrels live in families with up to 10 per burrow. In these burrows, ground squirrels live, store food, and feed their young. The holes created by these squirrels can be large enough to trip a full-grown human and can cause many other problems for homeowners.

Problems Ground Squirrels Cause

If you value your health and the health of your yard, ground squirrels are the last creatures you want running and digging freely about. Just like their cousins, rats and mice, ground squirrels can be hosts for a range of serious diseases including the plague. Ground squirrels can also pose a risk with the pests they carry. Both fleas and ticks go hand in hand with these furry creatures. When brought close to homes, these parasitic pests can leap off them and onto your household pets. These parasite pests bring their own slew of problems.

Ground squirrels are extremely difficult to prevent. Their holes allow them to stay out of sight and avoid any treatments you may try to use against them. It is not uncommon for them to dig large holes under concrete, patios, and fences. This in and of itself can lead to damage to your property.
